Infiniti has just announced the newest QX80, the luxurious sibling to the Nissan Patrol, and it’s packing a significant upgrade. The new model will feature a 3.5-liter twin-turbo petrol V6 engine, replacing the older 5.6-liter naturally-aspirated V8. This new engine boosts the power output to 335kW, a notable increase of 37kW over the current Patrol V8. Torque is also up by 138Nm, bringing it to a hefty 698Nm.
In comparison to the LandCruiser
300's twin-turbo diesel, the new engine offers an additional 108kW of power,
although it falls short by 2Nm in torque. Meanwhile, the Lexus LX600's
twin-turbo petrol V6 is outmatched by 30kW and 50Nm. The new Patrol will also
benefit from an upgraded nine-speed torque-converter automatic transmission,
replacing the existing seven-speed unit. This new transmission promises better
acceleration, fuel efficiency, and overall performance responsiveness.
Codenamed 'VR35DDT,' the new
engine is an upgraded version of the 3.0-liter twin-turbo 'VR30DDT' found in
the Nissan Z sports car. The Infiniti QX80 will also introduce features such as
air suspension with adaptive dampers, which contribute to a quieter cabin
thanks to increased torsional rigidity.
The Infiniti QX Monograph
concept, unveiled in mid-2023, gives a detailed glimpse of what to expect from
the new 'Y63' Nissan Patrol, set to arrive in Australia by 2025. While the
Patrol and QX80 will share design elements, spy shots indicate that the Patrol
will feature traditional door handles and larger headlights, whereas the QX80
will have hidden handles and slimmer headlights.
A production-ready Patrol prototype shown to US dealers revealed a strong resemblance to the Range Rover, sporting a robust aesthetic with updated headlights and taillights. The interior has also undergone a complete revamp, featuring a modernized design.
